Breakfast with a fox family

I’ve been watching these foxes for several months now but they never cease to surprise me.

A few days ago, they were kind enough to show me something I’d never seen before.
It all began as a rather rough encounter of two adult foxes and a cub. It quickly turned out that the scare-faced, seemingly aggressive adult is, most likely, the mother of two slightly older foxes and at least three cubs.

Their initial apparent hostility turns into what appears to be a friendly family meeting, where the three younger cubs suckle their mom, and waggle their tails while playing with their older siblings, one of which tries to join the youngsters looking for an available teat. Unfortunately, those teeth prove too much for the vixen and the whole party ends as suddenly as it began.

But don’t take my word for it. Take a look at the video.

Time to come back

That’s it for this part of my project. I’ll continue in England. We’ll see if there’s any difference. Although, the amount of time I have left will not allow me to repeat the tunnel survey, I’ll try to collect some scats in and around London.

Before I left, I’d decided to make the most of that wonderful time and have the last summer walk in the forest. Photographing a slow worm (Anguis fragilis) and a hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia or Bonasa bonasia) made it even more exciting.
